FILM REVIEW
“Black Mirror” is a british science-fiction series produced by Netflix and Channel 4. The director of this series is Charlie Booker although Annabel Jones serves also as the programme showrunner. The episodes have different plots, so the series don’t follow the same storyline but there have always something in common, the negative vision of a near or far future. That is reflected on the episode we tried to watch in class “Nosedive”.
The chapter directed by Joe Wright is about a girl called Lacy who wants to buy a luxurious apartment. But in this future, society has embraced a technology wherein everyone shares their daily activities through eye implants and mobile devices and rates their interactions with others on a scale of one to five stars, affecting the status of every person. Lacy can’t afford that house but if she gets a 4,5 of rating she will get a discount. Since that happened, Lacy tried her best to be kind to people which had high scores so she could have that rating quickly. By posting a photo of a toy, her ex-best friend Naomi who had almost a perfect rating, invited her to her wedding as the maid of honour. But a couple of unfortunate events due to this obsession made her to lose all the rating she had and to get crazy at the point of entering prison.
The most interesting thing of the chapter is its moral: it’s a story that makes the audience reflect on how technology can affect our lives and how the opinions of the people can affect the behaviour of somebody. Maybe if she had behaved in another way being kind to people but with her own personality, the story would have ended in a better way. Another good point of the episode it’s the recreation of locations such as futuristic houses or business.
One fault that I can find is that there are parts that are a little bit repetitive and boring, especially at the beginning and that there are parts that blow your mind but in the negative meaning of the word. If I were the director of the series, I would make more dynamic episodes.
In my opinion Black Mirror has better chapters than Nosedive, but this chapter is perfect in terms of special effects, locations and meaning and I had enjoyed it a lot.
