BLACK MIRROR . Mireia Viladot

NOSEDIVE

Last days, in the English class, we watched an episode of “Black Mirror” called “Nosedive”. It’s a film of science fiction published in 2016. The director is Joe Wright.

Lacie, the protagonist, lives in a world in which people rate each other according to their personal interactions, their photos, the way they greet or the way they look.
Lacie needs a 4.5 to get a discount on a luxury apartment. Then she decides to upload a
photograph of Mr. Rags, a rag doll that she and her childhood friend Naomi made together.
Naomi had one of the highest qualifications and when she saw that picture, she invited Lacie
to deliver a speech like the bridesmaid.
On the day of her flight to the wedding, several setbacks cause people to rate Lacie
negatively, lowering her rating. Her flight is canceled and she causes a scene. After several
misfortunes, she decides to hitchhike. A truck driver wih very low qualification,
Susan, carries her. After a few minutes, Naomi tells her not to attend for his qualification.
Lacie arrives at the wedding and begins to deliver the speech she had written. Her
qualification falls below a star and she ends up in jail. She and a man realize that they can
now talk without worrying about being qualified, and their insults are thrown.

I liked because it is a criticism of the society with the relation of the social networks. In addition, I liked because at the end, it defends on freedom of expression. The only think that I didn’t like is how it ends. I would like it that all the people had a low score.

In conclusion, I recommend it because it’s an episode very shocking and if you watch it, you will have another perspective of the social medias.
